Boiler Upgrade Scheme: How to Apply and What You Need to Know

Have you heard of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme? If not, then you could be missing out on some money to help with the cost of installing renewable heating in your home. There are a few things you need to know about the Government scheme before applying, including whether or not your current heating system qualifies. Read on to find out more.

The Key Points You Need to Know

Part of the Heat and Buildings Strategy which commits more than £3.9 billion pounds of funding to carbon emissions reduction, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is aimed at decreasing CO2 emissions.

Under the new scheme, eligible homeowners will be able to receive government grants for the purchase of environmentally-friendly heating systems like heat pumps that run on natural gas, as opposed to traditional systems.

The cost of the boiler upgrade will vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of boiler you have, the size of your property, and your location. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme allows eligible householders to claim:

  • £5,000 off the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
  • £5,000 off the cost and installation of a biomass boiler
  • £6,000 off the cost and installation of a ground source heat pump

Who Is Eligible?

In order to be eligible for the scheme, you must be a homeowner in England or Wales and have an existing fossil fuel heating system in your property that is being replaced with a renewable heating system.

A current Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is necessary to show that the basic energy efficiency measures have been installed in your home. In any case, we will be happy to arrange an EPC and any needed energy efficiency measures on your behalf.

Even if you have already received funding/grants for insulation, windows, or doors, you are still eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is not available to properties that already have low-carbon heating systems. Only properties that are replacing fossil fuel heating systems (such as oil, gas, and electric heating systems) may qualify.

What Technologies Qualify?

Only properties replacing fossil fuel systems with low carbon heating systems are eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Low carbon heating systems include but are not limited to: biomass boilers, solar thermal, heat pumps (air source, ground source, or water source), and combined heat and power units.

If you’re not sure whether your system qualifies, you can contact our team for more information.

You’ll need to have a Green Deal Assessment in order to apply for the scheme so it’s worth checking if your home is eligible before committing to anything financially.

How Can I Get Work Done?

If you’re looking to upgrade your boiler and make your home more eco-friendly, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme can help. The scheme, which is being run by the government, will help with the costs of installing renewable heating in your property.

So how can you actually get work done? The grant is applied for by the installer, and the grant value is subtracted from your payment. Here are some very straightforward steps:

  • Your local MCS certified installer is able to carry out the work
by making sure installers and products meet the appropriate standards, the MCS quality assurance scheme ensures installer competence
  • A grant-eligible installation is determined by the installer
  • You agree to a quote for the installation
  • An installer applies for a grant
  • Your installer confirms that he or she is acting on your behalf when Ofgem contacts you
